- The theory of the gift is a theory of human solidarity. Each gift given and received in Baghdad strengthens a bond and contracts both parties to a shared and mutual understanding that we will neither forget nor break this cycle of reciprocity. One enters the beginning of this perpetually escalating arms race of generosity at one's peril: who will give more? And how will the gift affect and transform the receiver?
